Food and Nutrition Education Community Gathering

On Wednesday, February 7th, the Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education, and Policy hosted the inaugural Food and Nutrition Education Community Gathering. We welcomed over 30 Nutrition Education Providers and 200 community members to the gorgeous Smith Learning Theater for a night of networking, idea-sharing, and cooking demonstrations. Council Members Rita Joseph and Gale Brewer delivered inspired addresses that underscored the importance of food and nutrition education, food access throughout New York City, and the integral role that universal free school meals play in public schools around the state in ensuring quality food for our young minds. We want to thank every Nutrition Education Provider and volunteer from Teachers College who helped foster a spirit of collaboration and cannot wait for the next time we can gather in the community. Check out some fabulous comments from some of our Nutrition Education Partners below!

The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center:

The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center highlighted the Smart Pantry pilot, which launched at the Hunter College Silberman campus in East Harlem this semester. The Center’s team offered lessons on how to prepare vegetable stock using veggie scraps, an economical use of the vegetable by-products. Additionally, guests were offered a snack of healthful Empire apples sourced from LynOaken Orchard, a woman-owned farm in New York State.

Seeds in the Middle:

Seeds in the Middle partners with students, schools and communities to create nourishing places to live and learn in our unhealthiest, low-income neighborhoods. We teach how to grow food, run farm markets, cook fresh, get fit and engage in the arts - all elements needed for sustainable healthy change. We seek to erase food deserts, food inequity, and health disparities by teaching everyone "to fish" - growing a people-powered network of farm markets run by schools and community leaders in underserved neighborhoods unjustly deprived of affordable, fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy options. Green Beetz:

We chose a hummus recipe from our Nutrition Basics lesson plan because it’s easy, inexpensive and nutritious. My favorite part of the evening was when a couple of kids from the Brother Sisterhood Sol came over and tried hummus for the first time!

Children’s Food Lab:

Below is the recipe for Children’s Food Lab corn tortillas that I make with my students. We make the dough, and while it sits for 20 minutes, we discuss the history of corn, corn's use today, and the biology of the plant. Then we look at corn varieties!

Plant Powered Metro NY:

Plant Powered Metro NY envisions communities free of illness, and people living their best lives, through the widespread adoption of whole food, plant-based (WFPB) nutrition. Since March 2019, PPMNY has been creating awareness of the benefits of WFPB nutrition while also educating and empowering the public through events and programming that support adopting a new lifestyle. PPMNY sources recipes from our growing community, which includes our staff, volunteers, previous program participants, chefs, and medical professionals.
